HOW WE WORK WITH INSURANCE COMPANIES
WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU FIND WATER/SEWAGE IN YOUR HOME
- Turn water off to the home immediately; at the water main in the home
- If there is standing water or if the water was visibly gushing/flowing; contact a mitigation company as quickly as possible. You should also contact your insurance CARRIER and begin the claims filing process
- If the affected area is visibly wet floor/walls/ceiling/area/ etc, and no gushing water, contact your insurance AGENT to discuss your options of whether or not you should file a claim. Sadly, not all water loss claims are covered so the more info you have, the better off you are
- Once you speak with your agent and make an informed decision on filing a claim or not, you should contact a restoration company
- Take photos of and then move furniture and other personal belongings in the home away from the water/wet area to minimize damage
- Start documenting the damaged area and items in your home with photos and by writing things down. This information will be vital in helping you work with your insurance on your water loss
WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU EXPERIENCE A FIRE IN YOUR HOME
- Contact a mitigation/restoration company to come out and help assess the damages to the home. The damage by fire is only part of the loss. There will likely be water damage on top of the fire damage due to the fire department extinguishing the flames. A mitigation/restoration company can also secure your home if there is any exterior damage that would require a board up.
- Contact your insurance CARRIER and begin the claim filing process. Insurance will ask specific questions in regards to the damages, the condition of the home, and other immediate needs, such as where you can stay, what clothing is needed, etc. Pay close attention to the questions, even be prepared to take notes, as they will help you navigate the situation
- Start documenting the damaged area and items in your home with photos and by writing things down. This information will be vital in helping you work with your insurance
- Stay calm. Fire losses are extremely emotional and time consuming. Oftentimes results are slower than what you hope. Being calm will help you stay focused through the claims process. Fire is rarely not covered, so keep that in mind as you review the damages. Insurance and mitigation companies are there to help
WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU DISCOVER MOLD IN YOUR HOME
- Try to identify where the moisture for the mold is coming from. If it is coming from moving/running water, turn the water off to the home, appliance, or line water is coming from
- Contact your insurance AGENT to discuss your policy and potential coverage for mold damage. any policies do not cover mold as it is often indicative of a long term problem
- Isolate and contain the affected area. Cover any HVAC registers and returns. If the mold is active, spores can circulate through the home using the ducts. Closing off the area and the HVAC openings decreases the possibility of the mold spreading
- Contact a mitigation/restoration company to come and assess the situation and provide any necessary information in regards to how to test and abate the mold
- Keep everyone, especially children and animals away from the moldy areas. Most mold is not toxic or deadly, but it is still classified as a hazardous material. Children and pets may not understand this. Keeping everyone away from the affected area can eliminate additional spread or possible sickness from the mold
WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU EXPERIENCE SMOKE IN YOUR HOME
- Turn off your furnace or air conditioner to eliminate more smoke moving through the house. Open windows and doors, if possible, and increase airflow in the home. Turn on ceiling fans to provide additional circulation
- Contact a mitigation/restoration company to begin the air purification and cleaning process in the home.
- Contact your insurance CARRIER and begin the claim process. Similar to fire, smoke is often covered under your home policy.
- Discuss with your insurance adjuster and the mitigation company as to how you would like the smoke damage to be handled. This includes the removal and cleaning of soft goods (clothing, etc), furniture, appliances, the home structure, etc. Like fire, smoke losses can also be emotional so the more involved you are, the easier it is to work through the process
- Start documenting the damaged area and items in your home with photos and by writing things down. This information will be vital in helping you work with your insurance
WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU EXPERIENCE WIND DAMAGE TO YOUR HOME/ROOF
- Contact a mitigation/restoration company immediately to secure the roof and home, in an attempt to minimize damages to the home. This is specifically applicable to damages that are allowing the elements into your home, like rain or snow
- Contact your insurance CARRIER and begin the claim process. Wind damage is often a covered loss under most policies. Be aware, though, that damages will be viewed per event, and not as cumulative damage. This means that only damages that occurred at the same time will be lumped together. If there is any old damage not related to the claimed event, that damage will not be included in your claim, more often than not
- Work directly with your insurance adjuster to get an estimate for the damages. For example, a damaged roof oftentimes does not mean the roof will be replaced, despite what a roofing professional may tell you. Allow insurance to determine the damages and then work with a roofer/contractor to make the repairs to the home
- If there is damage inside the home due to the elements getting in, this would be treated just like any other water loss. A mitigation/restoration company should be used to assess and clean up then repair the damage
